Hey Marshal, City of Hamilton is a bit of a hit and miss for acquiring the permits sometimes is super quick, sometimes they take a while. Especially when you’re revising/changing accepted drawings..

As for the process I’ve worked with a few inspectors and I’ve never had any issues. As long as you follow their guidelines and follow code without trying to shortcut you’ll be fine! Just do your due diligence when hiring the right contractor/GC. To be honest the only ones that are a bit of a pain is ESA. Sometimes they ask for stuff that’s not needed. My advise do what they say instead of fighting it and delaying your project (Obviously only if it’s something reasonable and not like a complete rewire or something along those lines). If you have any additional questions feel free to PM me I’d be happy to help if I can. Cheers

For any city to make the process easy:

    1. Find a permit guy and/or a contractor that has working with permits in that area. They generally have good relationships with the city

    2. When speaking with the city don’t fight them on what they ask you to do, just get it done because that is when they can really delay things if you piss them off.

I see @giancarlocataldo has responded, he is a great contractor. Here are some more awesome contractors, investors and permit guys that have work in that area.

Hi Marshal, Giancarlo’s experience is reflective of my own when dealing with the city of Hamilton. Just like every other municipality, Hamilton has staffing shortage issues, technology issues (their site was recently hacked for example) and they have had a lot of their experienced planners retire. The result is that your applications and the speed/ease of review will vary depending on who you get. We had one inexperienced plans examiner on a basement reno and it held our permits up by 3 months. Other applications have gone relatively smoothly. Feel free to reach out if you need help on a project.
